Saudi forces open fire on their own mercenaries in border region

At least three people were killed and several others injured on Tuesday when Saudi forces quelled a rebellion by Yemeni mercenary soldiers fighting in the Jizan sector.

This was reported by Yemen News Portal, based on military sources.

Military sources in Hadi’s forces said that Saudi forces stormed a camp for the soldiers of the so-called First Yemeni Brigade Duty in Jizan and began firing live bullets and bombs at hundreds of recruits who had gathered in the camp to demand the payment of their salaries.

The shooting killed and injured a number of demonstrators, and Saudi forces subsequently moved to arrest more than 400 mercenaries.

The border areas with Yemen have been plagued by escalating disputes between Yemeni recruits hired by Saudi Arabia to defend its territory, and Saudi forces that are now trying to deport them after having cut off their salaries for the past nine months.

Mercenaries of Yemeni descent in Saudi service have often been subjected to mistreatment, discrimination and violence at the hand of their Saudi employers, and have often been used as little more than cannon fodder in battle.
