Mohammed al-Houthi calls on UN to designate Saudi Arabia a sponsor of terrorism

Senior leader of Ansarullah, Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, has on Sunday evening called on the UN to implement the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act (JASTA), against Saudi Arabia.

The move came in a comment following two remarks by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo that Washington was still considering putting Ansarullah on the “terror list.”

“I advise Trump and Pompeo to make progress in implementing the JASTA , if they care about the justice of the citizens who are victims,” al-Houthi tweeted.

Al-Houthi accused the current US administration of seeking to obtain funds in exchange for Saudi dictates, noting that “the US is fighting the Yemeni people and is truly straining them.”

The JASTA grants relatives of victims and survivors of the September 11, 2001 attacks the right to proceed with a lawsuit they filed nearly 10 years ago against Saudi Arabia for financing a terrorist group, before they were listed as terrorists.

Saudi Arabia welcomed Washington’s bid to designate Ansarullah as a terrorist group, days after US officials revealed Washington’s possible inclusion of the Yemeni political organisation.

“Washington’s designation of the Houthi group as a terrorist organization would be entirely appropriate,” Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan said in a press statement on the sidelines of the G20 summit on Saturday, using the imperialist term used to designate Ansarullah.

Meanwhile, the United Nations has rejected the direction of the administration of president Donald Trump to include Ansarullah in on the “list of terrorists organisations.”

UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned against any unilateral moves. Guterres made the remarks on Friday, as aid workers have already raised fears that if Washington carries out its threat in designating Ansarullah as a so-called Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO), it will bar life-saving aid from reaching the impoverished country.

Reports state that within the United States and even within the Trump government, there is significant opposition to the call for designating Ansarullah as terrorists, amongst other reasons due to the fact that Ansarullah has never carried out any terrorist attacks of any kind.

The Saudi and US call against Ansarullah is all the more peculiar since numerous reports have stated that the Saudi-led invaders have used militants from al-Qaeda and similar takfiri terrorist groups in their war against the Republic of Yemen.
