Powerful explosion aboard oil tanker in Saudi city of Jeddah

A powerful explosion has rocked an oil export port in the Saudi coastal city of Jeddah, amid Saudi secrecy over the incident.

An oil tanker in Saudi Arabia’s port city of Jeddah has suffered an explosion early on Monday, after being hit by “an external source,” the Associated Press reported.

The Singapore-flagged BW Rhine saw all 22 sailors on board escape without injury, the BW Group said in a statement. The company warned it was possible some oil leaked out from the site of the blast.

Saudi Arabia did not immediately acknowledge the blast, which struck off a crucial port and distribution centre for its oil trade.

No information has been divulged yet on whether it could be a retaliatory strike from Yemen, in retaliation for the Saudi invasion and blockade.
