Two people killed in grenade explosion in Ethiopian capital

At least two people were killed and a third seriously injured in an explosion in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, Reuters reported, citing police.

The police blamed the explosion on a hand grenade that went off in the Lidetta area of the city in the afternoon, and said they were investigating. One of the venues of investigation is a possible link to recent violence in the state of Tigray.

Ethiopia sent its troops to the northern region of Tigray in early November to fight against the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, which had attacked army bases in the region.

The TPLF subsequently withdrew from the regional capital of Mekelle before the end of the month, upon which the Ethiopian government declared victory.

The violence in Tigray reportedly killed thousands and forced hundreds of thousands to leave their homes in the mountainous region of about five million people.
