Martin Griffiths reportedly about to end position as UN Envoy to Yemen

The UN Envoy to Yemen, Martin Griffiths, will give his latest briefing to the UN Security Council on Yemen on Wednesday, media sources in Washington said, ending his three-year career as a mediator on the Yemeni issue without any tangible successes.

Reuters reported the dismissal Martin Griffiths, and his appointment as UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs.

The United Nations is in the process of appointing a new Envoy to Yemen, amidst assurances that Griffiths will be appointed to his new position as replacement for Mark Lowcock.

Political and diplomatic circles are awaiting the name of Griffiths’ successor, which may be evident in the wake of the upcoming Security Council meeting.

Martin Griffiths, a British diplomat, is the third UN Envoy to Yemen and was appointed on 16 February 2018, to succeeding Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed from Mauritania, who also failed to make any breakthrough towards stopping the war, and the Moroccan Jamal Ben Omar, who left the post already as early as April 2015.
