Tunisian Speaker of Parliament and head of the Ennahda Movement, Rached Ghannouchi, has on Monday accused the Emirati media of having pushed Tunisian towards the recent presidential takeover and the targeting of the headquarters of Ennahda.
In an interview with Turkish channel TRT, Ghannouchi said that “The Tunisian military establishment separates between what is political and military, and it has no interest in getting involved in political issues.”
Ghannouchi added that President Kais Saied’s decisions do “not serve democracy or partisan pluralism, but reflect a thirst for control of state institutions.”
He explained that the office of the Ennahda movement held a meeting and took the decision to condemn the takeover, and called on President Saied to reverse his decisions.
Tunisian President Kais Saied on Sunday ousted Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi’s government, suspended parliament, and revoked the immunity of all its members, in response to perceived government incompetence in the face of a worsening economic situation and the hard-hitting Covid-19 pandemic.
