Armed conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan continues

Fighting between Azerbaijani and Armenian forces has continued last night on several axes of confrontations in the region of Nagorno-Karabakh, known as Artsakh by the local population, in the fiercest round of conflict in more than a quarter century.

The Azerbaijani Defence Ministry said in a statement that Armenian forces had tried to recover lost ground on the Karabakh front by launching counter-attacks in the directions of Fizuli, Jabrayil, Agdere and Terter. But the Azerbaijani army had countered these attempts and “forced the hostile forces into retreat, causing heavy losses”, the statement read.

The Azerbaijani report furthermore stated that during night battles, several Armenian armoured vehicles were destroyed, as well as an artillery battery that supported the convoy’s movement with fire.

On the other side, the Armenian Defence Ministry reported that “battles of varying intensity continue, accompanied by artillery shellings on the part of the enemy.”

“Armenian units have repelled attacks by Azerbaijani forces in several areas of the Line of Confrontations,” the ministry added. “The enemy has suffered significant losses of life and equipment in some areas”.

According to the statement, Armenian forces “destroyed several armoured vehicles on the southern axis.”
