Armenian President Armen Sarkissian called on the international community to do more to “stop Turkey’s interference in the conflict” in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, before the region turns into “another Syria in the Caucasus.”
“If we don’t start working internationally now to stop Turkey, there is a possibility that this region will be transformed into a new Syria, and everyone will suffer,” he told the Financial Times.
He added that “the moment Turkey emerges from this equation”, the region will approach the truce and the warring parties will return to the negotiating table.
Sarkisian warned that the possibility of foreign militants in the area after the fighting “poses a threat not only to Armenia, but also to the Caucasus and Russia.”
Armed clashes broke out on the line of confrontations between Azerbaijani and Armenian forces in the Nagorno-Karabakh region and adjacent areas in the most serious escalation between the two sides in more than 20 years amid mutual accusations of starting hostilities and attracting foreign militants. Turkey and Azerbaijan have been accused of using takfiri terrorists that were previously active in Syria and Libya in battle against Armenian forces.
