Vast areas of farmland contaminated as oil leak hits Shabwah pipeline

A large amount of crude oil has leaked from abandoned pipelines in the Saudi-occupied Shabwah province, eastern Yemen.

Activists posted on social media on Tuesday pictures showing the farmlands in Ar Rawdah District turning into large crude oil swamps.

Activists warned of an environmental and health disaster that threatens the lives of citizens in the region, as a result of the mixing of groundwater with crude oil.

They blamed the local authorities in Shabwah’s Islah Party for the neglect of the dilapidated oil pipelines, which need urgent maintenance.

The petroleum industry in Yemen is in a particularly bad state, as a result of years of neglect by occupation authorities in areas that are considered of lesser importance to Saudi and Emirati strategic objectives.
