At least five soldiers and an officer were killed in Abyan, southern Yemen, on Monday, in an attack by unknown assailants on a checkpoint belonging to UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council( STC) militias.
Local sources said that the attack was carried out with various types of weapons, and targeted an electricity point in the Lauder district, leaving a number of wounded, as well as destroying a military pickup vehicle.
The identity and motives of the attackers are not yet known, although pro-STC activists have suggested that al-Qaeda was behind the attack.
The Lauder district is one of the central directorates of Abyan, which Hadi loyalists and STC militants have been fighting since the start of the war in the province in August last year.
