United Nations aid official Martin Lowcock has urged Washington on Thursday to reverse its plane to designate Ansarullah in Yemen as a “foreign terrorist organisation.”
According to Reuters, Lowcock warned that this step would drag the country into “famine on a scale not seen in nearly 40 years.”
In prepared remarks for a briefing of the UN Security Council, seen by Reuters, Lowcock is set to tell the 15-member body that a US plan to issue licenses and exemptions to allow aid agencies to continue working will not prevent a worsening famine in Yemen, which relies almost solely on imports.
