The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Tuesday that it had detected 78 deaths and more than 218,000 suspected cholera cases in Yemen during a total of 11 months in the year 2020.
The organisation added, in a report published on its website on the health situation in Yemen between January and November 2020, that Taiz, Hodeida, Bayda, Ibb and Sana’a are the provinces that witnessed the worst outbreaks of the epidemic.
The report emphasised that the WHO continues to support health authorities in responding to the spread of the cholera epidemic.
For its part, the Ministry of Health and Population in the National Salvation Government in Sana’a said that the total number of suspected cholera cases during the year 2020 reached 228,000.
The official Yemeni news agency Saba reported, quoting the Ministry of Health, that no less than 1,200,000 suspected cases of malaria have been registered, while the confirmed cases of dengue fever reached 57,000 cases.
The report furthermore indicated that the suspected cases of seasonal influenza infection amounted to 6,615 infections, and the suspected cases of diphtheria amounted to 14,210 cases, while the suspected cases of rabies reached 14,210 affected.
Yemen suffers from a severe deterioration in the health sector due to the ongoing war launched by Saudi-led coalition for almost six years in a row, which has led to the closing of half of all medical facilities in the country, making thousands of people vulnerable to epidemics and diseases.
