Former US Deputy Ambassador to Yemen Nabil Khoury has on Saturday said that the United States supports negotiations between what it sees as the three major Yemeni sides in the recent conflict, in negotiations that the international community is pushing for.
This comes just a day after the announcement of the new US administration’s foreign policy program, which has placed Yemen on the list of priorities of new President Joe Biden.
Khoury said in an interview with Al-Jazeera that his country will push for the participation of those he describes as the “Houthis” [a term used by certain countries to designate the National Salvation Government], the Hadi government and the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) in the upcoming negotiations on a comprehensive solution.
This marks the first time that the United States has openly recognised the National Salvation Government in Sana’a as a party in negotiations for the future of Yemen.
