The Yemeni Ministry of Culture has appealed to UNESCO to quickly intervene in order to preserve the historic city of Tarim in Hadhramaut province.
Tarim city has witnessed torrential rains which led to the destruction of a number of historic buildings.
“Tarim is one of the most important historical Islamic cities in the World,” the Culture Ministry’s statement said, adding it includes unique buildings, palaces and famous mosques.
The statement called on the people of Tarim to prevent random construction, especially in the streams of torrents, in order to ensure the ease of rainwater and torrential flow.
Tarim is considered a major Islamic theological, judicial and academic centre, and is the location of the renowned Islamic seminary Dar al-Mustafa. The city is noted for educating several important Islamic theologians and scholars throughout history, and is estimated to contain the largest population of Sayyids, or descendants of the Prophet Muhammad, in the world.
