Martin Griffiths: UN wants end to Saudi blockade of Yemen and nationwide ceasefire

The United Nations Envoy for Yemen, Martin Griffiths, has on Monday said that the positions of the United Nations are clear and include removing all obstacles that prevent Yemenis from obtaining food and basic commodities, including fuel.

This came during a press conference upon his departure from Sana’a International Airport after a two-day visit, during which he met with Sayyid Abdul-Malik Badreddin Al-Houthi and senior officials in the National Salvation Government.

Griffiths indicated that he discussed, during his meeting with Sayyid al-Houthi, the United Nations plan that includes a nationwide ceasefire, lifting restrictions imposed on the movement of people and basic goods, and resuming the political process.

“The continuation of military actions in many parts of Yemen undermines peace prospects and endangers the lives of Yemenis, and must stop,” he said.

He added, “The proposals we put forward include the reopening of Sana’a airport and allowing commercial flights to resume,” he said.
