The Yemeni army, backed by Popular Committees, have launched a major attack on Salafist forces that were supported by al-Qaeda in al-Sawma’ah district, Bayda province in central Yemen.
According to the sources , the Yemeni army forces have taken control over positions in Hazmieh front, while Salafist forces and al-Qaeda elements were mobilising to launch counter-attacks on the army’s positions after skirmishes over the past two days.
Dozens of Salafist and al-Qaeda fighters were killed and wounded, while many others were captured by the the army forces, the sources said.
Al-Sawma’ah district is one of al-Qaeda’s main strongholds in Bayda, from which the group has carried out several executions and bombings of buildings under Yemeni control in the directorate.
