Large explosion reported north of Tehran

Iranian authorities confirmed on Friday evening that a large explosion had been heard north of the capital Tehran.

Tehran Deputy Governor Hamid Reza Goudarzi, who is in charge of security issues, said in a press statement that an explosion occurred inside the Mellat Park.

He added: “We are investigating the dimensions and causes of the incident, and we will provide information after we are sure.”

“We received reports of a large explosion in Tehran, and rescuers and firefighters were sent to the scene,” Jalal Melki, spokesman for the city’s fire department, said in a press release.

Iranian television reported that an unknown object exploded inside a park, but caused no human casualties.

Police units were deployed opposite the park after reports of the explosion, close by the Iranian Radio and Television Corporation.

Fars News Agency reported that the sound of an explosion was also heard as far as areas west of Tehran.
