Human Rights Watch calls for release of female activists

Human Rights Watch (HRW) had called on Saudi leaders to annul all charges, convictions, and sentences issued against women’s rights defenders who were jailed for practicing activism and peaceful expression of their views.

The organisation’s Deputy Middle East Director, Michael Page, said that the new evidence “proves the kingdom’s involvement in brutal torture against women’s rights defenders and prominent detainees.”

Page considered that “leaving those involved to be tortured without [the culprits being held to] accountability helps them to escape punishment.”

Page called on Saudi officials to take urgent steps to stop these crimes and hold the perpetrators to account at the highest levels.
