At least 34 migrants have likely died, while 6 others are confirmed to have survived when a wooden boat carrying them sank on their way to the Canary Islands in Spain, sources from the Mauritanian Coast Guard reported on Tuesday.
The sources pointed out that the six migrants were found on Monday, and managed to escape, while their companions probably died. The Coast Guard added that searches for them are underway on the coasts of the city of Nouadhibou, 450 kilometers west of the Mauritania capital, Nouakchott.
The migrants told the coast guard that they had left the Moroccan coast on August 2, and that heavy waves and wind movement pushed their boat south towards the Mauritanian waters and prevented them from reaching Spain.
