Former President of Afghanistan, Ashraf Ghani, and his former Defence Minister have settled alongside members of their families in the United Arab Emirates, after fleeing Afghanistan following the Taliban’s takeover of the capital Kabul.
Afghan media said that Ghani settled with his family in the Emirati capital of Abu Dhabi, following conflicting rumors about his final destination.
A government source told Al-Jazeera that the Afghan Defence Minister, General Bismillah Khan Mohammadi and two of his sons had taken refuge in the Emirati city of Dubai.
Ghani and Khan Mohammadi have so far not issued an official statement regarding the news reported by Afghan sources about their arrival in the UAE.
Last Sunday, Ashraf Ghani said on his Facebook account that he had left Afghanistan before the Taliban entered Kabul, stressing that he did so “in order to avoid bloodshed.”
Two days ago, Russian media sources reported that the Afghan president fled with 4 cars and a helicopter fully loaded with money.
