Hundreds of thousands of Yemenis march to mark Ashura and commemorate Imam Husayn

Hundreds of thousands of Yemenis in the capital Sana’a and a number of provinces have on Thursday staged mass rallies commemorating the Day of Ashura and the anniversary of Imam Husayn’s martyrdom.

At the rallies, the participants raised banners and slogans denouncing the US policy in the region, and calling for a boycott of American and Israeli goods.

During the events, speeches and poems were delivered about the revolution of Imam Husayn and the position of truth that he had taken in the face of tyrants and oppressors.

The protesters confirmed they will continue confronting the Saudi-led aggression, stating that “our revolution stems from our belief in the justice of our cause, and it is an extension of Imam Husayn’s revolution.”

The protesters confirmed their adherence to Imam Husayn’s approach, his teachings and the examples set during his life.

Meanwhile, the Leader of the Yemeni Revolution, Sayyid Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, affirmed that “Yemen has taken its decision and position in combating Saudi-led aggression, including upholding the right of its people to freedom and independence, as well as supporting the Palestinian cause.”

“We reaffirm our well-known position and make our choices along with the right side to stand with the Palestinian people and uphold our people’s right to freedom and independence,” Sayyid Abdul-Malik al-Houthi said during his speech on the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Husayn.

“The right path is to stand in the face of the enemies in their efforts to humiliate our people and our nation”, he added.

The Sayyid explained that the Yemeni revolutionaries “seek to enhance all factors of power and stability, as well as protecting the home front from the intrigues of enemies.”

“The right path is to seek to strengthen all factors of strength and steadfastness, and to protect the home front from the intrigues of the enemies, while falsehood is in standing with the aggression against Yemen, justifying it, or staying silent about the crimes and siege,” he explained.

Sayyid al-Houthi noted that “the nation today is in clear progress, and this has been shown in the defeat of the Americans recently in Afghanistan.”

Ashura marks the annual commemoration of the Battle of Karbala, in which Imam Husayn, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, together with most of his family and followers, many of whom were family and early followers of the Prophet Muhammad, were brutally murdered by forces of the Umayyad leader Yazid.

Millions of people gather around the shrine of Imam Husayn in Karbala every year, as well as in many other places in the world, to commemorate Ashura.
