US threatens to sanction Saudi Arabia following Saudi-Russian weapons deal

The United States has threatened to impose sanctions against Saudi Arabia, after it signed an agreement to purchase defense weapons from the Russian Federation last Tuesday.

In statements to Al-Hurra channel, a US State Department spokesperson said that the United States was aware of Saudi Arabia and Russia signing the agreement.

“We urge all US partners and allies to avoid major new transactions with the Russian defence sector, as is stated in Section 231 of the Countering America’s Adversaries (Act CAATSA) that had imposed sanctions on Iran, North Korea, and Russia.”

“The United States and Saudi Arabia continue to establish a close and lasting security partnership,” he emphasised.

“We remain in regular dialogue with our Saudi partners to strengthen our commitment to help defend Saudi Arabia,” he claimed.

Observers believe that Washington fears the possibility of Saudi Arabia bringing Russian experts with Russian weapons into the kingdom, which Washington considers a closed military place that the adversaries of the United States must not enter.
