As US withdraws from Saudi Arabia, Greece steps in to provide missile defences to Riyadh

The Greek Chiefs of Staff announced Wednesday that a team of its armed forces was headed to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to deliver air defence batteries used in Patriot missile systems.

During an official visit by Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias and Defence Minister Panagiotopoulos to Saudi Arabia in April 2021, an agreement was signed between the two countries to supply Riyadh with guided air defence batteries.

Greece’s delivery of defense batteries to Saudi Arabia comes at a time when the United States is withdrawing its own missile defence systems and other military equipment, in addition to soldiers, from Saudi Arabia and other regions in the Middle East as part of a campaign to reposition its mission and forces to confront Russia and China, according to a source at the US Department of Defence.
