China denies claims of sheltering former Kazakh president Nursultan Nazarbayev

China’s Foreign Ministry says that reports of former Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev residing in China are “false and baseless”.

The Foreign Ministry added on Tuesday: “This is completely false information. We noted that the press secretary of the former President of Kazakhstan said that Nazarbayev is currently in the country’s capital, Nursultan.”

Recently, rumors spread in the media that Nazarbayev flew to China.

Earlier, Nazarbayev’s press service reported that the former president of Kazakhstan is in the capital, Nur-Sultan, and that he called on all Kazakhs to rally around the current head of state, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, to “overcome current challenges and ensure the safety of the country.”

The reports on Nazarbayev’s whereabouts come just days after Karim Massimov, former right hand man of Nazarbayev, was arrested by Kazakh security forces on suspicion of treason
