UN Envoy to Yemen says prisoner exchange deal in the making

The UN Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, has on Thursday revealed during a briefing to the Security Council that progress has been made in the prisoner exchange file in Yemen.

The UN Envoy urged all parties to expedite agreement on the details of the captives release process, confirming that “the United Nations will support the International Committee of the Red Cross in efforts to implement the prisoner exchange agreement.”

He described the truce in force in Yemen as “fragile and temporary,” stressing “the need to work collectively and intensively to ensure that it does not disintegrate.”

The UN Envoy considered the armistice as “an opportunity to direct Yemen in a new direction,” affirming the importance of strengthening this path by making progress on the political front.

Grundberg furthermore said that he would work with all parties to build on the elements of the armistice in order to preserve it, as part of a multi-track process that he seeks to launch.
