Violent explosions rocked the vicinity of one of the headquarters of the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) militia in Abyan province, southern Yemen, media sources reported on Saturday.
The explosions, believed to be resulting from an attack by Al-Qaeda, occurred in the vicinity of the headquarters of the so-called Security Belt near the electricity office of Lawdar district, east of Abyan, were followed by violent clashes.
The sources said that clashes took place with light weapons and lasted for about half an hour, followed by the deployment of Security Belt patrols in the city’s streets.
The clashes in Abyan came hours after Al-Qaeda militants attacked the Security Belt camp in Hakoula area, north of Dhalea city.
