UAE-backed forces impose exploitative “kafala” labour on workers from northern Yemen

The UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC)’s militias have imposed the so-called “kafala” or sponsorship system on citizens from the northern provinces.

Activists circulated a form for the STC’s Security Belt forces in Yafa’e showing the imposition of a sponsorship system on the citizens of the northern provinces.

This comes at a time of escalating banditry and armed robberies against travelers in the Tor al-Bahah and the Taiz- Aden road.

The kafala system means that workers from northern Yemen working and living in the south need a local “sponsor”, usually their employer, to ensure their legal permission to stay and work in the areas occupied by UAE forces, similar to the system used for migrant workers in countries like Saudi Arabia and the UAE. The system has been widely criticised as being highly exploitative and detrimental to the rights of workers.
