Whistleblower reveals corrupt intents behind alleged fundraising to ensure safety of Safer oil tanker

A former Yemeni ambassador has revealed on Sunday the secrets of a so-called fundraising campaign to maintain the Safer floating oil storage unit, warning of a dangerous conspiracy.

Political analyst and former ambassador Abdullah Salam al-Hakimi, warned of the claims to repair the Safer oil tank in Hodeidah, the intimidation campaign of using the environmental disaster that will result of it were to sink, and the collection of global donations for it.

Al-Hakimi pointed out that the aim of collecting donations for the maintenance of the floating reservoir is “to conspire to move it from one place to another, seize the reservoir and deprive Yemen of oil exports ij case the Yemenis regain control of the oil fields in Ma’rib.

The Safer petroleum storage unit has been in a state of decay due to severe lack of repairs ever since the Saudi invasion of Yemen in 2015 made it impossible for Yemeni engineering teams to conduct necessary upkeep. Despite repeated calls to the United Nations to take up its responsibility in ensuring the repairs, much needed works still remain undone. If the Safer were to leak or sink, this would likely cause an oil spill disaster of cataclysmic proportions destroying much of the ecosystem of the Red Sea.
