French forces arrived on Monday in the oil-rich province of Shabwah, eastern Yemen, local media reported.

According to Yemen News Portal, dozens of French soldiers arrived at an Emirati base at the Balhaf gas facility in an attempt to secure the looting of the Yemeni resource and its transfer to European markets with the direct support of the Saudi-led coalition.

According to local sources familiar with the matter, the French forces arrived at the Balhaf LNG-producing facility, of which the French Total owns 39.62%, after agreeing with the UAE to resume gas production away from the so-called “legitimate government”.

Last month, the UAE struck an agreement with France to re-initiate operation of the gas facility, which sparked widespread discontent amongst Yemenis, due to the absence of the coalition-backed government and the presidential council during the signing of the agreement.

The arrival of the French forces coincides with the arrival of US and British forces in Yemen’s strategically important coasts and islands, within the framework of controlling maritime navigation routes and securing the plundering of wealth.
