New conflict looms in Aden as Saudi Arabia demands UAE-backed forces hand over airport

Saudi Arabia has given an ultimatum to the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC), demanding it to hand over its positions at Aden International Airport to a force loyal to the Saudis.

According to Southern media sources, Saudi forces had asked the STC militia stationed at the airport to evacuate their positions and hand them over to a security force they had trained on their territory over the past two years.

Saudi armoured vehicles arrived at the airport to implement the decision, but the STC militia refused to budge, and even and brought in reinforcements, the sources said .

The same sources pointed to the deployment of armed men belonging to the leader of the so-called Southern Resistance led by Abdul Nasser al-Ba’wa “Abu Hammam” in civilian clothes in the vicinity of the airport and the main streets in the district of Khormaksar, in conjunction with a similar deployment in the vicinity of the presidential palace of al- Ma’ashiq as well as in Mualla and Tawahi districts.
