Saudi Arabia underestimated ambition and skill of Rashad al-Alimi, former puppet ruler gone rogue

Saudi Arabia has underestimated the power that the return of the so-called President of the Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad al-Alimi, to Aden city on Sunday could showcase.

Abdullah al-Hatila, assistant editor-in-chief of the Saudi official Okaz newspaper, indicated in a statement to the media that al-Alimi would not be able to achieve what he described as “the aspirations of the Yemeni people” without sufficient support from what he described as the “Arab-rejecting projects of Iran.”

Al-Alimi left Saudi Arabia a week ago, angry at Riyadh’s decision to refuse to hand over a deposit estimated at $3 billion and to replace it with a new loan supervised by the Arab Monetary Fund under the name of “reforms.”

Rashad al-Alimi subsequently toured Jordan and the UAE, and succceeded in getting the emirate of Abu Dhabi to announce support for him at a value of 300 million dollars. He also held a reconciliation session with Aidarous Al-Zubaidi, President of the Southern Transitional Council (STC) and major rival to the Saudi plans in southern Yemen, before allowing him to return to Aden.
