The Minister of Transport in Sana’a, Abdul Wahhab Al-Durra, appreciated the United Nations’ efforts to solve the problem of the floating oil tank “Safer” by announcing the purchase of an alternative tanker to empty the crude oil.
The minister said in a statement that the UN Development Program had signed an agreement last Thursday with the “Euronav” company operating in the maritime transport field to purchase a large crude oil tanker.
He pointed out that the United Nations confirmed that the replacement tanker is currently in a dry dock to make adjustments. He added that the tanker is being maintained regularly, before it will be sailed to the Safer reservoir site. It will reach its destination in early May 2023.
Al-Durra expressed his hope that the unloading process would be accelerated due to the deterioration of the Safer reservoir, which could no longer bear the delay, noting that the UN is well aware of the seriousness of the situation and its disastrous repercussions on the region, like the environment and marine life.
