Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian announced on Sunday that the United States and Iran have reached a preliminary agreement on the exchange of prisoners.
Minister Abdollahian also expressed his hope that the first exchange would take place in the near future.
“If things go smoothly from the American side, it is possible that the deal will be completed soon and we will witness the exchange of prisoners. We look at the issue as a humanitarian file,” Abdullahian explained.
Earlier, the American NBC news network reported, quoting informed sources, that the United States and Iran are conducting indirect negotiations on the exchange of prisoners, mediated by Qatar and Great Britain.
According to the sources, the two sides are discussing an equation that was discussed in 2021, which could include a possible prisoner exchange and the release of billions of dollars of Iranian funds in South Korean banks that are currently blocked due to US sanctions.
