US officials in Qatar to discuss release of American prisoners in Iran

The US State Department has announced that the Commissioner for the Rights of Prisoners Abroad, Roger Carstens, is holding consultations in Qatar on the release of American prisoners in Iran.

The US State Department stated in its statement that Carstens will visit Doha from March 13 to 16, and will deliver a speech at the “Global Security Conference.”

The statement added that Carstens is also expected to consult with “representatives and stakeholders” on resolving issues involving detained Americans around the world.

US State Department spokesman Ned Price said a few days ago that the Iranian authorities’ claim about the prisoner exchange agreement with the Americans is a “cruel lie.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian indicated earlier that “a humanitarian agreement was reached with Washington on the exchange of prisoners, saying “if everything continues well on the American side, we will witness an exchange of prisoners during the coming period.”

According to many international experts, this visit is linked to America’s efforts to exchange prisoners with Iran, despite the US government’s official refusal to hold consultations with Iran about exchanging prisoners.
