Russia, China veto US-drafted resolution backing Israeli offensive

On Wednesday evening, The UN Security Council failed to adopt a US drafted resolution that urges against a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Russia and China vetoed the US draft resolution at the Security Council.

On the other hand, the Security Council failed to adopt a Russian draft resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and facilitation of aid into Strip. The United States vetoed the Russian draft resolution.

The UN Security Council voted on two draft resolutions on the war on Gaza, one sponsored by the United States and the other by Russia. Last week the council failed to adopt similar draft resolutions, one sponsored by Russia and the other by Brazil.

Any draft would need nine votes out of 15 to be adopted in the Security Council, provided no permanent members uses its veto.

The United States has submitted a draft resolution to the UN Security Council on the escalation between Israel and Palestine. The draft condemns Hamas, recognizes Israel’s right to self-defense, and calls for no ceasefire.
