UN Envoy meets with chief Yemeni diplomat in Oman

The UN envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, has met on Monday with the head of the national negotiating delegation, Mohammed Abdulsalam, in the Omani capital, Muscat.

During the meeting, which was attended by senior Omani officials, the officials discussed ways to advance the UN-sponsored peace negotiations.

The office of the UN envoy said in a statement, that the meeting touched on the necessity of reducing the escalation in the Middle East region on a broader scale.

The UN envoy to Yemen presented his briefing to the Security Council, during the session held on April 15, in which he stressed the urgent need to stop the regional escalation and a nationwide ceasefire in Yemen.

Grundberg reiterated the concerns of the UN Secretary-General about the risk of escalation in the region, stressing the need to make efforts to strengthen peaceful and stable relations.

During the briefing, he highlighted the missed opportunities to achieve progress in Yemen, compared to previous years that witnessed moments of hope and building confidence between the parties, but this year has been witnessed setbacks.

Grundberg stressed the importance of the urgent need for a nationwide ceasefire, and improvement of living conditions, in addition to the resumption of an inclusive political process in which every party concerned can participate.

He called for dialogue and cooperation under the auspices of the United Nations in order to avoid catastrophic consequences, warning against leaving the political process in Yemen to be suspended.
