Head of Hamas’s political bureau Ismail Haniyeh has been assassinated in Iran’s capital, Tehran, according to a statement from the Movement, which blamed Israel for his death.
In a statement released at dawn Wednesday, the Hamas Movement mourned its political bureau leader Ismail Haniyeh , saying he was “martyred in a treacherous Zionist airstrike on his residence in the Iranian capital, Tehran.”
Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards were killed after the building where they were staying was struck, Hamas’s statement said, adding that Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the inauguration ceremony of Iran’s president Masoud Pezeshkian, on Tuesday.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) also announced Haniyeh ’s assassination.
“Early this morning, the residence of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran was struck, resulting in his martyrdom along with his body guards. The incident is under investigation and will be announced soon,” the IRGC said in a statement.
