Hodeidah province hit by flash floods and heavy rainfall

Hodeidah province in western Yemen experienced heavy rains and flash floods on Tuesday, causing major damage to property and agricultural lands, and cut off roads.

The heavy rains and flash floods have been experienced across several regions, including the city of Hodeidah and the districts of Al-Tuhita, Al-Qanawis, Zabid, Bayt Al-Faqih, Al-Zaidiyah, Bajil, Al-Marawa’a, and others.

As a result of the disaster, government efforts and community initiatives were mobilized in the affected districts in both Hodeidah and Hajjah provinces to mitigate the effects of the floods and provide relief to those affected.

Local sources reported that local authorities in the districts affected by the floods opened schools to the affected families.

In turn, the Deputy Director of the Moral Guidance Department in the Ministry of Defense, Brigadier General Abdullah bin Amer, revealed that an operations room had been formed in Hodeidah, with official action and community interaction.

Bin Amer affirmed the participation of the armed forces in rescue efforts, calling for “organizing community initiatives through the local authority in Hodeida.”

During the past hours, the President of the Supreme Political Council in Sanaa, Mahdi Al-Mashat, made contact with the Deputy Prime Minister of the caretaker government for services and development affairs, Dr. Hussein Maqbouli, the Emergency Committee, and the governors of Hodeidah, Taiz, and Hajjah.

President Al-Mashat directed the concerned authorities to go to the field and carry out their duty towards the citizens in the affected areas.

According to the authorities, the immediate impacts of flooding include loss of human life, damage to property, destruction of crops, loss of livestock and infrastructure.

For his part, the Governor of Hodeidah, Muhammad Quhim, and a number of the province undersecretaries this morning inspected a number of areas affected by torrential rains.

The governor directed the competent authorities to quickly assess and comprehensively inventory the damage and loss of life and property and to work to quickly implement measures related to opening roads and facilitating the movement of citizens.

He confirmed that the local authority, several governmental and military agencies, and community initiatives are making great efforts to mitigate the effects of torrential rains in the affected areas.
