STC moves to criminalize opposition movements to consolidate power

The UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) dealt a significant blow to the General People’s Congress (GPC) and Ahmed Ali Saleh just two days before the latter’s supporters were set to hold a celebration for the anniversary of the Congress’s founding, which falls on August 23.

In a directive numbered 309, the STC instructed all its members, forces, and leaders to block any events, activities, festivals, or celebrations featuring flags or symbols other than those officially recognized by the STC, or displaying images of anyone other than the STC’s leaders.

The directive, issued on Wednesday, clarified that political and party activities and events provoke the STC’s supporters and disregard the sacrifices and bloodshed made for its cause.

The directive is seen as a new threat to the GPC, which is preparing to celebrate its 42nd anniversary and the lifting of international sanctions on Ahmed Ali Saleh, as well as his return to Aden.
