Supreme Political Council President directs resources towards Mahweet province in response to floods

The President of the Supreme Political Council in Sana’a, Mahdi Al-Mashat, directed on Wednesday the government to prioritize rescue and relief efforts in the Malhan district of Mahweet province and other provinces affected by the floods.

President Al-Mashat confirmed in a statement to the Yemeni News Agency (Saba) that the state would do its best efforts to provide assistance, praising the efforts made by the Supreme Emergency Response Committee and the field teams of the local authorities.

He urged the government and all concerned parties to give priority to the safety of citizens and to take all necessary measures to prevent further damage, assess the full damage, and develop a comprehensive plan to rebuild and recover from this disaster.

President Al-Mashat expressed his condolences to the families of the victims as a result of the heavy rains the country is exposed to, which caused sudden floods and rockslides in Mahweet, Hodeida, and Hajjah provinces.

The toll of missing persons due to floods that led to the demolition of homes in Mahweet province has risen to 33 missing persons, according to the Civil Defense Authority said on Wednesday.

The Authority added in a statement that rescue teams from civil defense and community teams recovered the bodies of seven citizens in the Malhan district, in an initial toll.

Mahweet’s police explained on Tuesday evening that 24 residents were missing as a result of torrents that swept away a number of homes and shops in the Malhan district, west of the province.
