New revelations show extent of suffering due to economic collapse in Aden

Activists on social media have shared a heartbreaking story highlighting the suffering of the residents in the city of Aden due to the economic collapse and the devaluation of the local currency.

In a striking incident, a woman in the city of Aden sold the door of her house on Sunday to provide a living mean for her family.

According to activists, the woman offered the door for sale in the Crater district of Aden.

The incident sparked widespread outrage among social media users, with some commenting that the door, a symbol of shelter, was no longer necessary in homes overtaken by poverty and hunger.

Others pointed out that the extreme poverty and hunger faced by the Yemeni people in areas under the control of the Saudi-led coalition had turned doors and windows into mere luxuries that could be dispensed with, after people had already sold their furniture and belongings over the past decade.

Since 2017, the local currency has experienced a rapid collapse, with the price of one US dollar exceeding 2,000 Yemeni riyals, while the “government” loyal to the coalition has failed to adjust salaries in line with the currency’s decline.

The pro-coalition government’s neglect in Aden and other areas under the coalition’s control is growing in various sectors of life, with the most pressing issue being the escalating electricity crisis.

The public electricity authorities in the provinces of Abyan, Aden, and Hadhramaut confirmed the total failure of the electricity grid.

Sources indicated that the collapse of the electricity system and the power outages affecting citizens’ homes were due to a shortage of fuel. Electricity institutions in Abyan, Aden, and Hadhramaut have held the coalition responsible for this failure, which exacerbates the suffering of the people.
