The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell said on Tuesday that EU member states should comply with the international law and the arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) last week against the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and his dismissed war minister, Yoav Galant, for committing genocide and war crimes in the Gaza Strip.
Borrell spoke on the sidelines of the G7 foreign ministers meeting in Italy, pointing out that “you cannot uphold when the court goes against (Russian President Vladimir) Putin and remain silent when the court goes against Netanyahu.”
“This inaction has created an impression among public opinion that the European Union is following a policy of double standards,” he added.
In a previous statement, he said the EU has failed to prevent Israeli practices during 2024 and the increasing number of civilian casualties in the Gaza Strip.
Borrell told reporters on Monday that the conflicts in the Middle East and the war between Russia and Ukraine were among the most prominent events during 2024.
“We were unable to prevent the increase in the number of civilian casualties, the humanitarian situation in Gaza has turned into a catastrophe, tensions escalated in the West Bank and the Palestinian Authority reached the brink of collapse,” he added.
