Security measures have been ramped up across Sydney ahead of a scheduled visit by Israeli occupation’s President Isaac Herzog, as grassroots tensions continue to simmer.
In response to the escalating situation, New South Wales police have extended a ban on public demonstrations, citing “security concerns.” Despite the restrictions, pro-Palestine advocacy groups have vowed to take to the streets on February 9 in defiance of the order.
The controversy has now moved into the legal arena. Expanded police powers, granted specifically for the visit, have been referred to the judiciary following a legal challenge arguing that such measures are unconstitutional.
According to “The Guardian” newspaper, the Palestine Action Group is currently organizing a mass protest in Sydney to voice opposition to Herzog’s visit. The group maintains that the right to protest should not be sidelined by the stringent security protocols currently in place.
